It’s how we create fully programmable haptic force feedback
But what is MRF, and why is it so important?
MRF or MR Fluid is short for Magneto-Rheological Fluid.
It is a smart liquid that consists of a mixture of fine magnetizable particles (typically iron) and a carrier fluid (e.g., oil or glycol).
The iron particles contained in the fluid are between 1 to 10 microns in size.
A human hair, in comparison, has a diameter of 50-70 microns.
Faster than the blink of an eye
When MRF is exposed to a magnetic field, the iron particles in the fluid link and change the MRF from a liquid to a semisolid.
This change occurs in less than 0,5 milliseconds, more than 200 times faster than the blink of an eye.
Once the magnetic field is removed, the MRF reverts to its liquid state.
Fully adjustable & incredibly accurate
The degree of change the MRF undergoes when exposed to a magnetic field is related to the magnetic field’s strength.
The stronger the magnetic field, the higher the yield stress of the liquid.
Therefore, the MRF’s level of stress resistance can be controlled very accurately by varying the magnetic field’s intensity.
This has made MRF the ideal technology for applications, such as brakes, suspensions, dampers.
Yield Stress vs. Magnetic Field Strength
Proven over time
While smart liquids such as MRF are new to most people, the MR technology has proven itself for over 20 years in the automotive industry in suspensions or steering systems, most prominently in the Audi’s® suspension system of the TT or R8 models.
But MRF dampener systems can also be found in the construction or medical industry.
Control is the key
At XeelTech, we utilize these characteristics to create our innovative haptic feedback technology.
The high level of control over the MRF is the key to our technology’s flexibility and accuracy.
Its fast response time allows us to switch between haptic patterns in perfect sync with the user interface – allowing for a perfectly synced user experience across all senses.
